New Delhi: Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government’s decision to evict a former Member of Parliament (MP) from his bungalow led to his supporters attacking Congress office in Mumbai to protest the decision to throw out their leader.
Republic Party of India (RPI) chief Ramdas Athawale was evicted on Friday afternoon from his bungalow at 8A Lodhi Estate for over-staying even after losing the recent Lok Sabha elections from Shirdi in Maharashtra.
Union Urban Development Ministry had served him a notice to vacate the house by September 3 but Athawale failed to do so.
After his refusal to vacate the bungalow, the former MP from Maharashtra was forcefully evicted leading to violent protests by his supporters in Mumbai.
As soon as the news of Athawale being evicted reached Mumbai, RPI workers attacked the Mumbai Congress office, pelted stones and shouted slogans against Congress, its President Sonia Gandhi and state governments.
Speaking to CNN-IBN’s sister channel IBN Lokmat, Athawale alleged that he was being targeted by the Congress because he was a Dalit.
On Thursday, too, a former MP was evicted from his bunglow for overstaying after losing the Lok Sabha elections.
Former Lok Sabha MP of the Bharatiya Janata Party Nand Kumar Sai was evicted from his bungalow in New Delhi's South Avenue.
Sai, who from elected from Chhattisgarh in the previous Lok Sabha, was later elected to the Rajya Sabha in August but had not given a new application to continue living in the bungalow.
A CNN-IBN report just a few days back had revealed that six former MPs and nine former ministers were still occupying palatial bungalows in Lutyens Zone although they have lost the Lok Sabha elections.
