'Inhumane': AAP Claims Arvind Kejriwal Not Being Allowed to Meet Wife in Tihar Jail

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh on Saturday claimed that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently imprisoned at Tihar Jail has been denied permission to meet his family, including his wife Sunita, in person.

Calling the move ‘inhumane’, Singh said that the AAP supremo is not being allowed to meet his family at ‘mulakat jangla’ and can only see his wife through a window.

“There is an attempt to break the morale of CM Kejriwal. His family has not been allowed in-person meetings with him. They are only allowed to meet him through the jangla. This is inhuman. Even hardcore criminals are allowed in-person meetings,” the AAP leader said.

For the unversed, the ‘mulakat jangla’ is an iron mesh which separates the inmate from the visitor in a room inside the jail. A visitor and an inmate can talk to each other by sitting on different sides of the mesh.

While there was no immediate reaction from the Tihar administration on Sanjay Singh’s claim, the chief minister was allowed to meet his wife Sunita Kejriwal and personal secretary Bibhav Kumar inside the prison on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the jail authorities scheduled Kejriwal’s meeting with his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann for April 15, saying that he could meet the AAP convener, but as a normal visitor in the ‘mulakat jangla’.

Earlier, Singh claimed that an inquiry had been launched into Kejriwal for sending messages to his MLAs through his lawyers from Tihar jail and that a threat was issued to stop his meetings.

“The Modi government is punishing Kejriwal for providing free amenities to Delhiites, including education, health, electricity and water. They want to turn Tihar into Hitler’s gas chamber, where CM cannot even send a message for public service,” Singh was quoted as saying in an Aam Aadmi Party statement.

Since his arrest on March 21, he has sent messages to his party leaders and directions to Delhi ministers through his wife and lawyers.

“Eight-nine policemen stay around Kejriwal during his meetings with his lawyers in jail. This is against the rules as inmates are allowed to speak to their lawyers privately,” Singh said.
