Kerala is the first Congress-ruled state where a PCC chief has expressed opposition to FDI in retail.

New Delhi: Protesting the approval of the FDI in retail, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Chief Ramesh Chennithala has written to the Prime Minister opposing the nod from the government.

Chennithala said, "I have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh opposing the Union Cabinet decision to throw open the doors of country's retail market."

The party in Kerala has been opposing FDI in retail fearing that the opposition Left would capitalise on it by weaning away small and marginal retail shop owners from its supporters.

Chennithala also said that he has met Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and asked him not to implement the Centre's decision.

Kerala is the first Congress-ruled state where a PCC chief has expressed opposition to FDI in retail.

Chennithala contended the decision will have a huge effect on thousands of small retailers in the state.

The Congress has, however, downplayed Chennithala's opposition saying party members are entitled to voice their dissent but the Central government's decision is final.

"Certainly there could be differences of opinion and they have a right to be conveyed, but as of now Central government's decision has been announced and implemented," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.
