A privileges committee chaired by Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha lawmaker Sunil Singh may hear the matter referred to the panel of three suspended MPs on January 12, CNN-News18 has learnt. Union minister for parliamentary affairs Pralhad Joshi had moved the motion on the floor of the house on December 18 to refer the case of these MPs to the privileges panel for further consideration.

The three suspended MPs are Dr K Jayakumar, Abdul Khaleque, and Vijayakumar (also known as Vijay Vasanth). They are expected to appear before the panel on January 12 to depose on the complaint of breach of privilege received against them.

The notice of the meeting reads “Oral evidence of Dr. K. Jayakumar, Shri Abdul Khaleque and Shri Vijayakumar alias Vijay Vasanth, MPs in connection with motion/resolution adopted by the House on 18 December, 2023 leading to their suspension from the service of the House for creating grave disorder in the House and referring the matter to the Committee of Privileges for further investigation and report to the House”.

More than 100 lawmakers were suspended from the Lok Sabha during the recent winter session of Parliament. After the breach of security in the Lok Sabha on December 13, many MPs from the opposition were suspended for the entire session for bringing placards to the house and continuing to demand a response from the prime minister or the home minister on the incident.

Among the leaders of various political parties who are suspended are Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Congress, Supriya Sule from Nationalist Congress Party, K Kanimozhi from Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Farooq Abdullah of National Conference, and Dimple Yadav from Samajwadi Party.
