New Delhi: In a major setback to the Bharatiya Janata party on a day when it comfortably crossed the half-way mark of 272 in the Lok Sabha elections, senior party leader Arun Jaitley was defeated by Congress's candidate Captain Amarinder Singh in Punjab.

Even before the counting got over, Jaitley conceded defeat as Amarinder Singh had taken a comfortable lead of over 59,000 votes in Amritsar. Singh said, "I had said on the first day that Jaitley has nothing to do with Punjab. He is an unknown factor in Amritsar."

This was the first time that Jaitley had contested the Lok Sabha elections and according to the sources his name was doing the rounds for the Finance Ministry.

Even though the BJP stalwart could not win the seat, the BJP and its ally SAD is leading in six seats out of 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

Giving a tough fight to the BJP in the state was Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party which has won one seat and is leading in three other seats. AAP candidate Bhagwant Mann won the Sangrur seat by defeating SAD's Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa by over 1.4 lakh votes.
