New Delhi: With just three days to go for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls, an analysis of the self-sworn affidavits of the candidates, conducted by National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), has revealed that the Indian National Congress has fielded the highest number of candidates with criminal cases against them.
The BJP comes in at second place and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) trails at a close third.
Of the 2537 candidates in the fray, 173 have criminal cases against them. Of these 173, Congress, BJP and AAP account for 82 such candidates in total.
The ADR report states that 35 (14%) of the 256 candidates fielded by Congress have criminal cases against them.
BJP has fielded 26 such candidates, which accounts to 10% of its 260 candidates. AAP is a close third, having fielded 21 candidates who have declared criminal cases in their respective affidavits.
In all, 7% of the entire candidate pool has criminal cases stacked against it. The list also includes 13 Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidates, three Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidates and one candidate each from CPI and CPI (M).
The ADR report also demarcates candidates with “serious” criminal cases against them. There is one candidate with a murder charge, 15 with attempt to murder charges, 7 with kidnapping charges and 23 with charges of crimes against women.
Here, too, Congress leads the pack with 22 such candidates. BJP has fielded 13 candidates with ‘serious’ charges against them, 15 such candidates have been fielded by AAP.
Additionally, there are 10 BSP candidates, 2 NCP candidates and one candidate each from CPI and CPI (M) with “serious” criminal cases against them.
