MNS spokesperson reiterated that the party would continue to fight for Maharashtrians.

New Delhi: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray's arrest by the Mumbai police on Wednesday evening has evoked varied reactions from the political parties.

While MNS spokesperson Shirish Parkar reiterated that his party would continue to fight for the Maharashtrians, Bharatiya Janata Party welcomed his arrest.

"It is an unnecessary action. We don't agree with it," Parkar said about Raj Thackeray's arrest.

"We will continue our fight for the Maharashtrians. We aren't repentant. We don't know anything about what Raj is going to do in the court," Parkar added.

BJP Leader Ram Naik, himself from Maharashtra blamed the state government for taking so long to arrest Raj Thackeray.

"Law has taken its own course but the government is guilty of delaying the action," Naik said.

"He should have been arrested long back . Raj Thackeray's activities should be considered as anti-national," another BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy added.

Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party leader and Maharashtra PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal appealed to the people to remain calm and maintain peace.

"The government has taken all precautions. We appeal the people to maintain peace. We aren't interested in Raj's political gains or Shiv Sena's losses. We wanted to send a message that nobody is above the law," Bhujbal, a former Shiv Sena leader, said.

Bhujbal also clarified that there was pressure on the state government to arrest Raj Thackeray.

"There was no pressure from anybody to arrest him. Government wanted to examine all aspects before his arrest," he said.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister RR Patil, who also holds the portfolio of the Home Ministry, said Raj Thackeray's arrest has shown that the state government will not let anyone take law into his own hands.
