New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government at the Centre is facing a huge political crisis. Some say it is unprecedented for a man like Modi, some argue that the charges against some of his ministers and party leaders are far more serious than the charges faced by the previous government.
However, the belligerent BJP top leadership is not relenting even as the opposition is firing on all cylinders. Opposition parties have been accusing the Modi government of protecting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, HRD Minister Smriti Irani and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.
Union Home minister and top BJP leader Rajnath Singh has somewhat embarrassed the party by saying that ‘no NDA minister will resign, it is not the UPA government'. The opposition hit back at him saying that Rajnath Singh has actually said that the UPA ministers did a mistake by quitting.
The most significant thing is the total silence of the Prime Minister Modi over the controversies surrounding his government and the party. The Lalit Modi controversy is getting complicated with every passing day. The new revelations are causing more harm to his government. The demand for the heads of Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje for allegedly help0ing the tainted and fugitive Lalit Modi, a former Indian Premier League chairman, is growing.
He is also facing the opposition's ire over Smriti Irani's degree and Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde's involvement in an alleged scam.
The cricket war between the cricketer-turned-BJP MP Kirti Azad and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has reached a new level. Azad has filed a police complaint against the Jaitley ‘controlled' Delhi District and Cricket Association (DDCA).
Most of the top leaders of the BJP are keeping quiet over the crisis. According to some insiders, since Modi and party chief Amit Shah handle everything, the sulking leaders want to stay away. They are not interested in defending either the party or the government.
Veteran BJP leader Yashwant Sinha added some fuel to the fire by making a sarcastic comment that the new BJP leadership has declared all BJP leaders above the age of 75 "brain dead". Leaders like him are unhappy over not being inducted into the Union Cabinet or not being allowed to contest in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. They feel completely isolated and ignored.
It is a well known fact that Modi rode to power on the enormous goodwill of the people who wanted him to deliver a scam free, efficient governance. Modi also promised the same during the Lok Sabha election campaign. The perception played a very big rule in his victory. It seems he is now losing the same perception battle.
In the last two months, the BJP has faced one crisis after another. Earlier the BJP used to taunt the Congress-led UPA with the slogan ‘a new scam everyday'. The opposition is now using the same slogan to hit back at the BJP.
The AAP government in Delhi which is under fire over former law minister Jitendra Singh Tomar's ‘fake' law degree is now using Smriti Irani's degree controversy to target the BJP.
Since public perception is very important to stay in power and strengthen the hold over government, Modi is expected to take some tough decisions.
Will he? The people may get the answer in a few days.
