Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited the 400-year-old Lord Jagannath temple on the eve of 134th Rathyatra and payed obeisance to the deity.
During his visit, Modi took account of the preparations of the rathyatra and sought blessings of Mahant Dilipdas Maharaj (37), who will preside over the Lord's historic journey on Sunday.
Modi also participated in the evening prayers and prayed for rains in Gujarat.
"Spirituality is the identity of India and is manifested through the medium of festivals in the nation. Rathyatra, which is being taken out in Jagannath Puri and Ahmedabad for more than a century, is a perfect example of it," Modi said.
Rathyatra or chariot festival is celebrated by Hindus on the second day of Sukla Paksha (waxing cycle of moon) in the month of Ashadh.
The yatra is an annual feature in Gujarat and is taken on the day of 'Ashadh Beej', a day, on which, the famous Puri Rathyatra is also taken out.
