PM Modi to visit Lucknow today
PM Modi will visit Lucknow on Friday, his first since he became the Prime Minister in 2014. Modi will pay homage to Dr B R Ambedkar, amid growing outrage over a Dalit student's suicide in Hyderabad. CNN-IBN correspondent Sumit Pande's report.

Narendra Modi will pay his first visit to Lucknow after becoming Prime Minister on Friday.

This is for the first time that a prime minister in office would visit the Ambedkar Mahasabha premises, a destination which holds a special place in the hearts of Ambedkarites.

Modi will be the chief guest at the sixth convocation of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU).

This visit by the PM comes in the middle of a fierce onslaught his government faces over suicide of a Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula.

Interestingly, BSP which has over the years successfully claimed Aambedkar's political legacy has never really given much importance to the Mahasabha even when in power. Mayawati, during her tenure as CM, never visited the Mahasabha office.

It was Mulayam Singh who, as CM had in early nineties, allocated the Mahasabha, the bungalow which houses Dr Ambedkar's ashes.

With elections round the corner, the current Akhilesh Yadav led government in UP has promised to allocate 5 acres of land to the Mahasabha to build a new office.

When asked about PM’s visit to Ambedkar Mahasabha campus, BJP spokesperson Chandra Mohan said that the PM was committed to the upliftment of Dalits, deprived and backwards sections of the society.
