Punjab remains tense after Sikh Holy book desecrated, CM calls emergency meet
Two people have been killed after clashes rocked a number of places in Punjab, including Faridkot, Moga and Sangrur district.

Chandigarh: Punjab continues to remains tense after reports of Sikh Holy book being desecrated were reported from Faridkot last week.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has called for an emergency meet of the cabinet on Tuesday evening to discuss the situation. Highways have been blocked at several places causing disruption to routine life.

Paramilitary forces have been deployed in Amritsar, Ludhiana and Jalandhar.

Sikh organisations are demanding action against those behind the incident of tearing of 150 pages of the holy book and Badal said the guilty would not be spared.

Three persons have been arrested so far and police claimed that the accused have confessed to the act.

The protesters were agitated over reports of tearing of pages of a holy book.

In Jalandhar, Section 144 of CrPC, which bars assembly of more than four people at one place, was imposed in the rural areas of the district till December 11, Deputy Commissioner KK Yadav said.

Sikh protesters had pitched their tents in Kotkapura town on October 13 to protest against the alleged desecration of the holy book which was reportedly stolen earlier from a gurdwara at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village of Faridkot on June 1.
