The media got the first glimpse of Robert Vadra when he accompanied Rahul Gandhi in 2004 to be a witness to the latter’s nomination process. Since then, people have been used to seeing the ‘jija’ who would restrict himself to a few visits and seldom spoke to the media.
Rob, as Rahul Gandhi calls him, was the former Congress president’s partner in Amethi, where the fitness freaks would often be seen exercising.
Vadra has been very clear about steering clear of politics, especially with many controversies surrounding him about his business and the BJP accusing him of corruption.
As Vadra braved the charges, he was aware of his vulnerability and how the allegations against him could be an obstacle for his wife Priyanka Vadra’s political ambitions. Some say he was reluctant about Priyanka joining politics as it could make the BJP and investigative agencies target him even more. But when she decided to take the plunge, Robert supported her wholeheartedly.
It’s clear though that he has some political ambitions too. In his many trips to Amethi, he ensured that the limelight was on Rahul Gandhi. However, as he visited several temples, he would make political comments, indicating he wanted to be a neta. When asked about his political ambitions, Robert would be nonchalant in his response: “I will choose the right time.”
Triggering fresh speculation, he told News18 recently: “… Everyone wants me to fight from many places, but I am clear that I will join at the right time. I have learnt and earned my place in politics.”
So, is the Gandhi son-in-law eyeing Amethi? As the Congress scratches its head to decide who will take on Smriti Irani and whether any of the Gandhis should take the plunge from Amethi or Raebareli, will there be an Irani versus Vadra fight? Will it not help the BJP unleash fresh attacks on him and on the Congress to make the point that the party cannot look beyond the Gandhis? Moreover, Vadra from Amethi won’t silence the BJP’s point that Rahul Gandhi has run away from a contest. On the contrary, it’s likely to bolster the idea further.
Some feel that Priyanka Gandhi is the party’s trump card and has the much-needed political potential. In case she loses if pitted opposite Irani, the scar of defeat could mar her future. In contrast, Vadra could be an “easier scapegoat”, according to a top Congress leader.
Some feel that Moradabad, which is Robert’s family place, could be a better choice but it’s a tough seat for the Congress. While India may be a country where the ‘damaad’ (son-in-law) is pampered, Amethi may not be too kind to Robert in the absence of an emotional connect.
