New Delhi: In an embarrassment to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party has decided to give a ticket to alleged don Atiq Ahmed, and Mukhtar Ansari's brother Sibaqtullah Ansari for next year’s Assembly elections.

Shivpal, however, continues to be the state president of the party, having a say in ticket distribution. In fact, it was the Samajwadi Party leader who announced the list of 23 candidates at party headquarters in Lucknow.

Despite objections from the CM, Shivpal had earlier announced the candidature of Amanmani Tripathi from Maharangunj district. Amanmani has been arrested by the CBI for the alleged murder of his wife Sara. The investigation was ordered by none other than Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

The party has also accommodated ‘don’ Atiq Ahmed in the latest list of candidates. The former MP from Phoolpur near Allahabad has many criminal cases against him. He has been shifted to Kanpur Cantt from his traditional seat in Allahabad.

The other two high-profile nominations announced by the party were for Swar and Banda assembly segments. Senior party leader Azam Khan's son Abdullah Azam has been nominated from Swar, while Hasanuddin Siddiqui, the brother of BSP’s Muslim face Naseemuddin Siddiqui, will be contesting on an SP ticket from Banda in Bundelkhand.
