The silent rise of KCR's daughter Kavitha
The silent rise of KCR's daughter Kavitha
There are rumours that Kavitha may contest in the Lok Sabha elections from one of the seats in Telangana.

Hyderabad: During election season, children of the politicians also enter the fray, courtesy their powerful parents. This Lok Sabha election season is no exception to this. But, a daughter is silently rising in the newly created state of Telangana. K Kavitha, daughter of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) founder and chief K Chandrashekhara Rao is likely to take the plunge this time.

But her story is different from others. The 35 years old Kavitha is the only daughter of KCR. She is a qualified software engineer, who studied in the USA. Married to an engineer Anil, she have two small boys. Kavitha returned home to assist her father in the Telangana movement in 2004.

Interestingly, Kavitha is not even a primary member of the TRS. She normally does not take part in the party programmes. She launched a voluntary organisation called Telangana Jagruthi to fight for a separate state of Telangana in 2006. She calls it an apolitical, 100 per cent pro-Telangana organisation.

The Telangana Jagruthi or TJ has been conducting various Telangana specific cultural programmes to promote Telangana culture. Her biggest achievement is the revival of Bathukamma festival and transforming it into a cultural symbol of Telangana through her organisation. Kavitha calls it a cultural renaissance movement. It is also working in the areas of youth and women empowerment, health, promoting book clubs and helping deserving students.

According to people close to her, even though she is not officially saying anything about the merger of TRS with the Congress, she will most likely retain her voluntary organisation and continue her work in the field of rural development and culture. There are rumours that she may contest in the Lok Sabha elections from one of the seats in Telangana. However Kavitha declines to comment on that. People close to her feel that even if the TRS merges with the Congress, she will continue her Telangana Jagruthi work.

According to a political analyst in Hyderabad, after the successful creation of Telangana, there is euphoria all over Telangana. The people of Telangana are happy and they are likely to stay with the Telangana Jagruthi. It may even emerge as a strong socio-cultural organization in the coming days.

Kavitha said, "Since our objective of creating Telangana state has been achieved, we will now focus on the cultural renaissance and social development of the new state. Telangana Jagruthi is a voluntary organization and the changing political equations won't affect us. Lakhs of youth and women from Telangana are a part of this forum and they will continue with this apolitical movement."

Some feel that Kavitha is keeping her cards close to her chest. If the TRS meges with the Congress, she may not go with her father and brother. Since she is not even a primary member of the TRS, she is under no obligation to follow them. If she mobilizes more support for the Telangana Jagruthi, it can even emerge as an alternative in a state, where there is no real opposition to the Congress and the TRS.

However Kavitha does not want to comment on the future of her organization. She says "Let's see what happens in the next two weeks. We will decide after that."
