Uncertainity looms over new J&K government, Mehbooba Mufti wants upper hand in coalition: sources
Mehbooba is also against the rotation of the chief minister which was agreed by her father Mufti Sayeed, said sources.

Srinagar: After the death of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, uncertainty is looming large over the fate of the new state government. As Peoples Democratic Party MP Mehbooba Mufti is a difficult nut to crack, she wants to change the terms of engagement with the alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party, said sources on Tuesday.

According to the sources, Mehbooba seeks to gain the upper hand in the coalition and is also against the rotation of the chief minister which was agreed by her father Mufti Sayeed.

After her father's death, Mehbooba aims to ensure complete support within the party before she takes over as the chief minister.

Mehbooba's swearing in is expected next week.

The sources said that the PDP is not considering the Congress and National Conference's offer to form the government but is using it to negotiate with the BJP.

The BJP is, however, confident that the alliance will continue in the state. The BJP is waiting for the PDP to make the first move. The BJP does not want the rules of engagement and arrangement to be tinkered with. The issue also came up for discussion during RSS meet in Jalgaon last week.

On the political tussle in the state, NC chief Omar Abdullah tweeted, "So many people writing pieces about what Mehbooba is doing by delaying government formation but have any of them actually spoken to her directly?"

The J&K Assembly's Budget session which was scheduled for January 18 has been postponed.
