New Delhi: Unruly scenes were witnessed in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday as CPM members entered the Well of the House demanding a Parliamentary probe into the alleged bribery sting involving Trinamool Congress leaders.
The purported sting showed 11 TMC leaders taking bribes to help a business firm start operations in the state. The video surfaced just a few days before the state will go to polls.
Questioning Centre's silence over the issue, CPM's general secretary Sitaram Yechury alleged that there is match fixing between TMC and the government. "The prestige of the House should be uphold. The House is responsible for all actions to be taken. The chair said that we cannot give orders and government also did not respond. Between TMC & BJP match fixing is going on and the Chair refused to react," said Yechury.
After the CPM leader created uproar in the Upper House, furious TMC MP Derek O'Brien said, "Mamata Banerjee is known for her transparency and credibility. The opposition should fight us politically. Let us not judge the content of the video but the credibility of the video must be questioned."
Asking West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to resign over the issue, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said, "Mamata left NDA earlier because of the same scandal. Hence she should apologise and resign now."
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has referred the issue of alleged bribery involving TMC MPs to Ethics Committee for investigation. The TMC is vehemently opposing Speaker's move saying that it will set a wrong precedent.
Top TMC Leaders including Mukul Roy, Subrata Mukherjee and Farhad Hakim were seen taking bribes in the purported sting operation. While TMC has questioned the timing of cash for favours sting, its opponents are likely to use this as ammunition in the assembly polls.
