UPA meet to discuss JPC postponed
The Government had called an emergency meeting of all UPA allies to discuss ways to end the 2G logjam.

New Delhi: The meeting at Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's residence to discuss ways to end the 2G logjam and to discuss the opposition's demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the issue was postponed on Monday evening.

The Government had called an emergency meeting of all the United Progressive Alliance partners on Monday evening.

Sources told CNN-IBN that a decision on constituting a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to look into the issue had to be taken in the meeting.

The UPA seemed to be divided over the issue of JPC. Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee told CNN-IBN that her party will support an investigation by a JPC into the 2G scam. If a JPC is constituted then it would investigate the telecom spectrum issue from 1998.

However, Sharad Pawar ruled out any rifts. He said, "There is no split in the UPA and the decision that the PAC is enough to look into the 2G spectrum issue is a collective decision of the UPA."

Parliament has been adjourned for the last 17 days as the Opposition has been adamant on an investigation by a JPC into the 2G spectrum scam. But the UPA Government has rejected the demand for a JPC leading to the logjam.

Congress is trying to take its major allies - Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) - into confidence. The three parties have had their own views regarding JPC.

Even on Monday, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day following protests by the Opposition parties. As soon as the House met at 11:00 AM Opposition MPs rushed to the well of the House demanding an investigation by a JPC into the 2G spectrum scam.

"Everything is good or bad depending upon how it works. It has worked earlier and people have been called and things exposed and penalised many people. The mood of the House is to have a JPC," said Bharatiya Janata Party leader Murli Manohar Joshi.
