UPA-II will not last till 2014: LK Advani
BJP leader LK Advani said that after the TMC's withdrawal of support, it was only a matter of time before UPA collapsed.

New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani has said that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government (UPA) will not last its full term till 2014. Demanding a special session of Parliament, Advani said, "After Trinamool Congress's (TMC) decision, the government has been destabilised. It is only a matter of time before it collapses."

He continued, "The BJP will demand special session on FDI. FDI in retail should not be introduced till there is consensus among stake holders."

Party sources said that the BJP would seek a special session of Parliament after Thursday's Bharat bandh protest in order to "expose the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party who may try to save the government".

The BJP called for a Bharat Bandh against a slew of measures announced by the UPA government to bring the economy back on track. The measures included a hike in diesel prices, a cap on subsidised LPG cylinders and allowing 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail. Reports now say that key UPA ally, the DMK, will also join the bandh.

The bandh also comes at a time when the UPA is reeling under pressure after TMC chief Mamata Banerjee's decision to withdraw from the government. Mamata announced on Tuesday that her ministers will withdraw from the Cabinet on Friday over the economic measures that she slammed as anti-poor.
