New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday said that India needs an urgent review of its defence preparedness after Uri attack where 18 Indian soldiers were killed by four terrorists belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammad.
In an exclusive interview to CNN-News18, Shashi Tharoor looked miffed at the way situation has been dealt with in the aftermath of Uri attack.
Minutes after India's Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar admitted that "something must have been wrong" because of which the Uri terror attack took place, Tharoor said, "It may not be the forces that are guilty of lack of preparedness, it could be the defence ministry or procurement process."
Shashi Tharoor emphasised that there is so much sophisticated surveillance equipment available around the world which could help India under such circumstances. "We shouldn't be in a position where anybody can just infiltrate into our army camp anywhere in Kashmir or elsewhere. It seems crazy that a large economy like India is vulnerable to such attacks," Tharoor told CNN-News18.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP also said that there shouldn't be any blame game on this matter. "What I am dismayed at is that after Pathankot happened in January, Uri should have happened in September. Pathankot should have taught us that our military and defence installations require better surveillance system."
Shashi Tharoor also supported Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar in his remark where he claimed that something must have gone wrong. However, he also said, "the buck stops at defence minister's desk and he doesn't want to point fingers at anyone."
"I think the defence ministry as a whole should look into everything that goes toward preparedness of our soldiers,"he said.
