Kolkata: The youth wing of the Congress and the Left have called for a strike across West Bengal after a college student was thrashed to death allegedly by Trinamool Congress youth wing members in West Midnapore on Friday.

Krishna Prasad Jana, a third year student of BA at Sabang Sajanikanta College, was also a supporter of the Congress party.

The student was allegedly lynched to death during a clash between student unions of Congress and TMC over felicitation of state minister Soumen Kumar Mahapatra at a college at Sabang in West Midnapore.

Five persons were arrested in connection with the incident, a police officer said but did not reveal their political affiliations.

Refuting allegations of involvement of his party's youth members in the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that TMC workers were not involved in the case and the student died due to an internal feud within Congress youth wing.

TMC leader Sukhendu Shekhar Roy said, "The information being circulated on this case is not correct. Mamata Banerjee has issued a statement and we have nothing to add."

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has called for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation. "Without an inquiry, how can Mamata Banerjee say TMC workers are not involved? There must be a CBI probe into this case," said Siddharth Nath Singh.
