Kolkata: The BJP state president Dilip Ghosh has tendered an unconditional apology for his controversial remarks against Mamata Banerjee at the West Bengal state Assembly on Tuesday.

He said he was new to Bengal politics and that he had made the remarks in excitement and that he would not repeat such an act in future.

As the war of words between the TMC and the West Bengal BJP unit gets murkier over the issue of demonitisation, Shahi Iman of Tipu Sultan mosque Maulana Noor-ur Rahman Barkarti has issued a fatwa on Monday against BJP State President Dilip Ghosh.

Barkarti questioned the audacity of the BJP State President for making derogatory comments against Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee who is trying to build an image of being a strong opposition against the BJP at the Centre demanding a roll back on demonitisation.

On issuing the fatwa, the Muslim cleric said, “From where does he get the audacity of make filthy comments against our beloved Chief Minister who the most secular leader of our country? I issued the fatwa which states that he should be pelted with stones and kicked out of Bengal. He does not deserve to stay in Bengal.”

Reacting to the fatwa, Ghosh questioned Barkati’s move. “What does Barkati think, is this Bangladesh or Pakistan that he will issue a fatwa against me? He can issue a fatwa against TMC, they will listen to him, not the BJP.”

Ghosh also pondered whether Barkati wishes to stay in India or planning to migrate to Pakistan or Bangladesh.

Mamata has been hitting out at the Modi Government on demonitisation, campaigning aggressively in Delhi, Patna and Lucknow.

At a public meeting in West Midnapore district on Saturday, Ghosh said Mamata has lost her mind, which is why she is going to Delhi and Patna.

He also commented saying, “When she was staging protests in Delhi, if we wanted we could have thrown her out of Delhi by grabbing her hair as we have our police deployed there, but we didn’t do so. How can a Chief Minister use such words for the Prime Minister, it’s not right.”

The Trinamool Congress on Sunday condemned Ghosh for using abusive language against Banerjee.

While Ghosh is unfazed at the fatwa issued by the Shahi Iman, in the days to come, will the BJP State President now choose to tone down his attack to avoid inviting more trouble for himself?
