Tamil actor Karthik has cemented his acting credentials with films like Agni Natchathiram, Kizhakku Vasal, and others. He has earned the acronym Navarasa Nayagan (multi-talented actor) for his ability to emote all forms of actions and emotions. He made his debut in Tamil cinema with the 1981 film Alaigal Ooivathilai. An interesting anecdote about how Alaigal Ooivathilai’s director Bharathiraja zeroed in on Karthik’s name in the film is very popular on the internet.
Renowned director and journalist Chitra Lakshmanan shared this information in an interview with a portal. Bharathiraja roped in a student of the Royapettah school for the role of the lead as the day of the shooting was getting closer. Bharathiraja, however, removed that student from the film as he didn’t seem a good fit for the role. At that time, Bharathiraja went to a private hotel to have coffee and accidentally hit a student on the way. He escorted that student to a hospital and stopped by actor R Muthuraman’s house for help. There, Bharathiraja saw Muthuraman’s son Karthik playing badminton. He then approached Muthuraman and initiated talks with him to rope in Karthik for essaying the male lead. Muthuraman agreed, and thus Karthik debuted in the Tamil cinema with the film Alaigal Ooivathilai.
Alaigal Ooivathilai was a success at the box office. Bharathiraja won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for the best film and best director categories. On the other hand, Ilaiyaraaja also won this award under the best music director category. Silk Smitha, Goundamani, Kamala Kamesh, and others also acted in this film. Pavalar Creations has produced Alaigal Ooivathilai.
Besides Bharathiraja, Karthik has collaborated with many talents, especially film directors who shaped him into who he is now. He has worked with Mani Ratnam, Visu, R Sundarajan, Amirjan and RV Udhaya Kumar. He has also worked alongside Priyadarshan, Fazil, and others. In his vastly illustrious career, Karthik has acted in more than 125 movies and earned Tamil Nadu State Film Awards. He has also won the Nandi Award and four Filmfare Awards South. In 1984, he starred in Nallavanukku Nallavan opposite Rajinikanth, which earned him immense fame and recognition amongst his Tamil fans.
