Rajinikanth has been ruling the Tamil film industry since the 1970s. He has also given some of his stellar performances in many Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada films. Rajinikanth also rejected some films that received staggering success at the box office. Fans would have loved to see Rajinikanth in those movies but he turned them down due to one or the other reasons. This space articulates the films rejected by Rajinikanth.
1. Mudhalvan (November 7, 1999)- S Shankar directed this film starring Arjun Sarja in the main lead. Little do people know that before Arjun, Shankar wanted to rope in Rajinikanth for the lead role (Pugazhendhi). Rajinikanth rejected the offer since he reportedly supported DMK leader M Karunanidhi in 1999. He would have reportedly not considered it right to support a political party and a film based on politics simultaneously.
2. Indian (May 9, 1996)- Initially, S Shankar had Rajinikanth’s name in mind to play the titular roles of Senapathy and Chandra Bose in Indian. Rajinikanth rejected this movie. The reason behind the rejection is not known yet. Post Rajinikanth’s rejection, Kamal Haasan was roped in to essay the lead role.
3. Papanasam (July 3, 2015)- Papanasam was the Tamil version of the hit Malayalam film Drishyam. Initially, makers had offered this role to Rajinikanth, but he rejected the role owing to differences in opinion over the script. It was then the makers reached out to Kamal Haasan for essaying the role.
4. Dhruva Natchathiram Chapter 1: Yuddha Kaandam (Not yet released)- This film, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, stars Vikram and has faced continuous delays for now. Gautham had initially approached Suriya and Rajinikanth to play the titular role in this movie. Thalaivar, as Rajinikanth is known, liked the script but rejected the film.
5. Tirangaa (January 29, 1993)- Rajinikanth was the director Mehul Kumar’s first choice for the role of Shivajirao Wagle in the film Tirangaa. He, however, declined to act in this film. According to a DNA report, he backed out because of Raaj Kumar’s presence.
