The festive season, particularly Pongal, is considered an auspicious time for film releases in Tamil cinema. Pongal 2024 is set to witness the release of several highly anticipated films, including Dhanush’s period action drama Captain Miller, Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam, and Sivakarthikeyan’s Ayalaan and Vijay Sethupathi’s Merry Christmas. In light of this, theatre owners have reportedly requested special screening permissions from the Tamil Nadu government during the Pongal festival.
The four-day Pongal festival is scheduled from January 15 to January 18, 2024. The theatre owners have submitted a request for special screenings starting from January 12 to January 18. In a letter to the government, distributors have sought permission to conduct early morning shows from 8 am, deviating from the usual show timings of 9 am to 1.30 am.
Dhanush’s Captain Miller is highly anticipated and is directed by Arun Matheswaran. The period action drama also stars Dr Shiva Rajkumar, Nassar, Sundeep Kishan, and Priyanka Mohan, with a Pongal release in the sights.
Aishwarya Rajinikanth, making a directorial comeback with Lal Salaam, features Rajinikanth in an extended cameo alongside Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth in lead roles. The sports drama is set for a grand Pongal release.
Sivakarthikeyan’s Ayalaan, after facing multiple delays, is finally slated to hit theatres during Pongal. Directed by R Ravikumar, the science fiction film also stars Rakul Preet Singh and Sharad Kelkar.
Merry Christmas, a bilingual thriller directed by Sriram Raghavan and starring Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif, is also on the list. The film is set to release on January 12, following a postponement from its original December release date due to the releases of Salaar and Dunki.
As the festive season approaches, the Tamil cinema industry is gearing up for a Pongal celebration with an exciting lineup of films, providing audiences with diverse genres and star-studded casts.
