Tamil Nadu recently faced severe floods triggered by incessant rains in various parts of the state. Director Mari Selvaraj, accompanied by Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, visited flood-affected sites in Nellai and Thoothukudi to assess the damage caused. However, Mari Selvaraj’s presence at the site alongside Udhayanidhi Stalin ignited controversy, with some members of society expressing displeasure, contending that the plight of the common man should not become a spectacle for film artists. Questions also arose about the perceived significance given to Mari Selvaraj by Udhayanidhi Stalin.
In response to the criticism, Mari Selvaraj, a native of Thoothukudi, defended his actions, stating that it was his hometown and his people who were suffering. He emphasised that his strength lies in the trust the people of his town place in him, and he asserted his commitment to being there for them in times of need.
Support for Mari Selvaraj came from various quarters within the film industry, with some personalities expressing solidarity on social media. Veteran actor Vadivelu also joined in supporting Mari Selvaraj’s actions and questioned his critics. Speaking at a public event in Chennai, Vadivelu addressed the issue, stating, “People are asking why Mari Selvaraj was present during relief work. It is his hometown. He knows the town well and knows where the hill and where the pit is. If there is a flood in my town, who else will go instead of me? Is Mari Selvaraj from the USA?” He further questioned critics about their objections to Udhayanidhi Stalin’s visit to flood relief sites, asserting that as a minister, he has a role to play in rescue operations.
Mari Selvaraj, along with a team utilising boats, reportedly rescued over 100 individuals trapped in the Karunkulam and Muthalangurichi districts due to flooding. Despite the criticism, his dedication to helping his hometown and the affected people received support from Vadivelu and others who recognized the importance of local figures taking an active role in relief efforts.
