AI will never be smarter than humans, and that’s because the technology does not perceive and understand reality the way humans do.
That’s what the Meta AI chief claimed recently, which is a direct rebuttal to Elon Musk, who said AI can be smarter than the smartest human beings. Musk claimed that by 2026, the big change would have happened, which is just another scathing big claim by the Tesla co-founder, trying to stoke the emotions of the techies in the world.
However, Yann LeCun, who is seen as one of the biggest names in the world of AI, was quoted in an interview, saying that AI systems are not as intelligent as humans and he cannot see them getting any better in the future as well. LeCun goes on to explain the reasons for his claims, and most of them seem legit, especially when the godfather of AI talks.
He points out that “reasoning, planning, persistent memory, and understanding the physical world are four essential characteristics of human intelligence,” something that AI systems cannot project or understand. We just like the ease and convenience of AI tools because of how they work. But AI also need to be trained and for that, we use data generated by humans.
LeCun also had some strong words to say against Musk about his statement, pointing out that if AI systems were smarter, they could learn self-driving in under a day, but we still don’t have fully autonomous cars even with millions of hours of training data available for the tech to advance and learn quickly.
AI is clearly going to split opinions, especially with regards to people losing or keeping their jobs. Industry experts feel AI is there to compliment people in their work and not replace them, but the changes we have come across lately suggest, AI could become yet another tool for businesses to trim their workforce, which is never ideal for anyone involved.
