Qualcomm's latest generation modem, officially revealed on Tuesday, will endow a mobile handset with a home broadband beating 1.2Gbps download speed -- network coverage permitting.

The Snapdragon X20, which will officially start being integrated into smartphones in mid-2018, can also upload at a rather impressive rate of 150Mbps.

"We anticipate that the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem will help accelerate the worldwide adoption of Gigabit LTE, allowing users to enjoy even faster data speeds, further improving consumers' always on mobile lifestyle," said Serge Willenegger, senior vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies Inc.

The impressive bump in speed should also whet consumers' appetite for 5G handsets and 5G network speeds. The first serious 5G network tests are currently underway, but the next generation mobile network isn't expected to become a consumer reality until 2020.
