While going on foreign trips and exploring new places can be exciting and adventurous, what can come as a major setback is losing some crucial documents or becoming a victim of pickpockets. This was actually the case for an Indian couple who had to go through a terrifying experience after losing their passport, debit cards, credit cards, and cash to pickpockets while traveling in Milan, Italy.
Jyotidev Kesavadev, a physician and diabetes researcher along with his wife Sunitha recently visited Italy to present a research paper in Florence. However, it was on March 5 when the couple had an encounter with a pickpocket and ended up losing their valuable documents and money. Jyotidev opened up on their ordeal on social media, with a long post and said that they were entering the Milan Central Railway Station in Italy to take a train to Florence when they bumped into a “tall African American man” on the way. Little did they know that the brief encounter would cause them a huge loss.
“His large trolley bag hit my right knee and I almost fell down. My wife, out of shock, forgot the surroundings and bent down to help me out. When I looked back I saw a woman passing by her and then the woman and the man disappeared instantly. Since we were getting late for the train, we went upstairs to the platform. My wife 10 minutes later opened her handbag and then with a shock realised that her wallet containing the passports, credit and debit cards and cash was missing,” the post read.
Later upon checking their baggage, the couple realised that the wallet containing the documents as well as the debit card, credit card, and cash was missing. The couple immediately rushed to the nearest police station and filed an FIR.
The social media mentioned added that the couple also reached out to a family friend and MP Shashi Tharoor.

Further mentioning that the incident left them quite “shaken and guilty”, the doctor also noted that such things have become common in Italy.
In the meantime, Shashi Tharoor also reacted to the post and wrote, “Glad it all worked out in the end jothy dev! So pleased our consulate did what was needed so well. MEA India.”
