Everything comes with a price and for a flock of parrots seemingly ‘travelling’ from Bengaluru to Mysore on a Karnataka bus, this rang true. Yes, you read that right! These parrots were actually issued a ticket by a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus conductor who charged them Rs. 444. This unusual incident has now gone viral on the internet, leaving everyone both shocked and amused.
The incident took place at the Satellite bus stand on a Tuesday morning (according to the date on the ticket), when a woman and her granddaughter arrived to board the bus from Bengaluru to Mysuru. Since they were eligible for free bus travel under the Karnataka government’s ‘Shakti Yojana’, they didn’t need to purchase tickets. However, things took an unexpected turn when the KSRTC conductor decided to charge them for the lovebirds they brought along in a cage, much to the confusion of other passengers.

The conductor ended up charging them a total of Rs. 444, which came to Rs. 111 for each of the four birds. This quirky move amused other passengers, some of whom captured and shared images of the grandmother and granddaughter sitting among the bus seats with their parrots.

As it turns out, KSRTC does allow pets on non-AC buses, including city, suburban, and rural routes, but not on premium services like Karnataka Vaibhava, Rajahamsa, non-AC sleeper, or any air-conditioned services. The fare for a pet dog is half the fare for an adult, while the fare for puppies, rabbits, birds, and cats is half the fare for a child.

Interestingly, Hans India reported that in this case, the parrots were treated as ‘children’. Additionally, passengers who fail to buy tickets for their pets are subject to a fine of 10 percent of the ticket price of their journey. KSRTC officials have also warned that if conductors fail to issue half the tickets for pets, they may face the possibility of a criminal case and suspension for misappropriation of KSRTC funds.
