A man recently recounted a less-than-ideal journey to Chennai, detailing how a local tour agency allegedly overcharged them. Narrating the experience, he began, “My family (12 PPL and 2 infants) planned to go on a tour to temple towns in the south (Madurai, Tirunelveli, Thiruchendur) so we rented out a 13 seater Force Tempo traveler from a local tour agency in Chennai.”
He then disclosed the agreed rental fee for the vehicle, emphasising his insistence on a well-maintained rental. Initially, the driver seemed amiable and bonded well with the family. “But something felt off when he started driving the vehicle under 50kmph as we were approaching our destination. We dismissed our suspicion as it was getting dark and the roads were not that wide,” the OP added.

However, suspicions arose when the driver maintained a speed below 50kmph as they approached their destination. Despite noticing the driver’s unusual behaviour, such as difficulty shifting gears and a suggestion for an unnecessary break due to a worn-out clutch plate, they chose to overlook it initially.
But this was only the beginning. “While returning back, near uludhurpet, it was 8 pm, the gear box jammed and was stuck in 4th gear. We were so pissed but couldn’t blame the driver for something unexpected,” the OP continued. They then contacted the agency for a replacement vehicle, which, disappointingly, was also in poor condition, yet they declined to switch.
Upon arriving home at 2 a.m., when the family proposed settling the remaining expenses the next morning, the driver became confrontational. “The driver started demanding that we settle the remaining amount ( we had already paid a certain amount while refueling throughout the trip),” the OP recounted. Matters escalated as the driver resorted to verbal abuse and name-calling.

“We called the owner and told him that we are tired and exhausted and we have to go through the estimates before we pay. Also we were yet to receive the report of toll charges. The owner paid no heed to our demands and suggested that we pay the driver(without the report of toll charges),” he concluded, noting that they were forced to pay for the replacement vehicle without any concession, as the agency highlighted that they ensured their safe return.
