Shravan is considered a sacred month by Hindus as it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. During this time, many devotees avoid non-vegetarian items as well as strong flavours like onions and garlic as they keep fast. This year, McDonald’s India has garnered attention by launching a special Shravan menu, featuring items like the McCheese Burger and McAloo Tikki Burger without onion and garlic. While the fast food chain’s move has grabbed eyeballs, not all feedback is positive. Social media users have criticised the establishment. Majority on the internet argued that eating out during Shravan should be avoided, while some individuals pointed out that the buns are made with maida, which is not preferable during the holy month.
A food blogger shared a video about the special menu on Instagram and wrote, “They’ve also got the classic Jain-Friendly McCheese Burger Veg, which is free from onion, garlic, and roots. And the new Flavours of India McAloo Tikki is onion and garlic-free as well. I had the Shravan Special meal and it was delicious. I even got a behind-the-scenes look during a kitchen tour – it was great to see McDonald’s has complete separate sections for veg and non-veg food preparation.”

Even though the food blogger assured that McDonald’s is using separate areas to prepare veg and non-veg food items, the internet was unimpressed.
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “After sometime McD feels they start selling sabudana burgers for those who are fasting.”
Another wondered, “Why even want to eat such fancy food in this holy month? At least for 1 month eat homely food.”
“But they keep non veg too. Then how to eat Shravan special in McDonald’s,” a comment read.
Another joked, “McDonald laughing in the corner: Kuch bhi lapet ke do ye khaa lenge. (Wrap anything up and we will eat it).”
An individual shared, “No onion no garlic, but with egg in buns, what sense does it make?”
One more added, “Can’t we restrict our self eating at such a location during holy month.”
Announcing the special menu, McDonald’s in a blog wrote, “Speaking of new seasons, we’re currently in the month of Shravan, as per the Hindu calendar. Dedicated to the deity, Lord Shiva, this time period is considered spiritual by Hindu communities all over. Now if you observe Shravan, you know that this period encourages followers to partake in a diet that’s balanced and vegetarian in nature. In support of our customers’ sentiments, it’s always a good feeling knowing that the McDonald’s India menu caters to our many distinct Indian communities.”
Since the video was shared online, it has garnered over 7 lakh views.
