India’s rich cultural tapestry shines through its incredible food, which has wowed taste buds across the globe. Whether it is flavourful chicken tikka masala or the tangy pani puris, Indian dishes have often taken the international stage by storm. One such dish making waves beyond online is the Amritsari Kulcha, a beloved Punjabi flatbread from Amritsar. This buttery, stuffed bread is typically filled with ingredients like spiced potatoes, panner or mixed vegetables. A recent video surfaced online showcasing its popularity now extending across the globe.

The video, shared by the page with the moniker Amritsar Is Live, shows an Amritsari Kulcha being sold on the streets of Shenzhen in China. The footage features a vendor skillfully preparing the kulcha, from rolling the dough to baking it in a traditional tandoor, just like street vendors in India. Once the kulcha is ready, the vendor wraps it up in a paper bag, ready to be served. The overlay text on the clip reads, “In Shenzhen, China, we get to see Amritsari Kulcha – the famous dish of Amritsar.”

“Amritsari Kulcha In Shenzhen, China,” the caption read.

Since being shared over a week ago, the video has taken the internet by storm, racking up more than 8 lakh views so far. The comment section buzzed with a variety of reactions from social media users. Here’s a glimpse of what people are saying:

One user humorously remarked, “Being an Amritsari, this is more authentic than ‘Amritsari Kulcha from Delhi.’”

Another chimed in with, “Punjabi lifestyle and culture are completely unique in nature and have no match.”

“How beautiful! Congratulations to you, this is so heartwarming to see,” someone else expressed and another commented, “Punjabi lifestyle and culture are completely unique in nature and have no match.”

A few users shared their own experiences with one mentioning, “In Amritsar, Sultanwind Pind Road has the best kulchas,” while another said, “I ate this when I was in Guangzhou.”

However, not everyone agreed that the dish shown in the video is Amritsari Kulcha. Some pointed out differences with one user commenting, “This is not Amritsar Kulcha. It’s their street food…similar to Kulcha…”

Another added, “This is not Amritsari kulcha, it’s a zinxian China dish.”

Meanwhile, a user quipped, “We got Amritsari Kulcha in China before GTA VI.”

In July, Taste Atlas, the online food ranking site, released its list of the 100 Best Dishes in the World. This year, Indian cuisine continued to shine, securing top spots on the list. India’s butter garlic naan claimed 7th spot on the list, while popular Tikka and Tandoori ranked 47 and 48, respectively.
