WWE icon The Undertaker has compared the modern in-ring wrestling style to ‘video game-type stuff’ in an interview. The Phenom recently appeared as a guest on Booker T’s Hall of Fame podcast. On the show, he touched on various topics including how wrestling styles have evolved over the years.
Speaking about the insane athleticism showcased by some of the modern wrestlers, he said, “It is completely two different worlds. It’s crazy, because never in a million years could I imagine how athletic these guys are today. I don’t know if it was the video games they played as kids, but they’re doing video game-type stuff in the ring."
While The Undertaker was quite impressed with the fitness of modern wrestling athletes, he also felt that it was a curse. He emphasised how an effort needs to be made to keep the focus on storytelling.
“I think sometimes it’s a curse, because they’re so athletic and they rely so much on that aspect that they forget the most important aspect of what we do, and that is storytelling," he concluded.
The Undertaker highlighted that these impressive physical manoeuvres also put them at risk of injury. “At some point in that match, you’re two inches away from something really catastrophic happening. The stuff that these guys are doing to get reactions from the crowds, I mean, it just makes it exponentially more dangerous than what it has to be," he said.
The Undertaker has established himself in the WWE as one of the greatest-ever icons. The superstar has been one of the leading characters in the WWE for the past three decades. Referring to his longevity, he highlighted how the previous generation of wrestlers had much longer careers compared to modern wrestling stars.
“Just being there through the years and knowing what it does to your body, it’s just like, man, you’re not going to have careers like we had. You’re going to burn out, you’re going to get hurt," he concluded.
With The Undertaker nearing his 60s, the professional wrestler’s appearances in WWE episodes have declined in recent years. He was last seen at WrestleMania 40 during the Undisputed Championship clash between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes. His appearance alongside John Cena, Jey Uso and Seth Rollins helped Rhodes beat Reigns for the title. There is no news if the phenom will feature on live television once again.
