Tesla's Rival Faraday Future Approved to Test Self-driving Cars
Tesla's concept car garnered much attention at 2016 CES, and might soon be seen on roads.

Faraday Future plans to begin testing prototype self-driving electric vehicles on California roads later this year after winning approval from the state, an industry source has said. The China-backed, Los Angeles-based startup plans to begin building and selling electric vehicles next year in the United States, but has not disclosed details of its self-driving programme.

Faraday is one of several Chinese-funded startups hoping to challenge Tesla Motors in premium electric vehicles. Like Tesla, Faraday also hopes to add self-driving capability to its vehicles, but has not provided a timetable. Faraday has been testing prototype vehicles for the past year at private facilities, according to the source familiar with the company's programme.

Jan Becker, senior director of automated driving at Faraday's San Jose tech centre, declined to give specifics on the company's plans to add self-driving capability, but said such systems, when introduced, would offer automatic over-the-air software updates similar to those provided by Tesla.

California previously approved 13 companies to test autonomous vehicles on public roads, most recently two Silicon Valley startups called Zoox and Drive.ai, funded by venture investors. The state's Department of Motor Vehicles also has approved testing by Cruise Automation, which was acquired earlier this year by General Motors.

Other approved testers include Alphabet Inc's Google, Tesla, Volkswagen AG, Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz, Nissan Motor Co, BMW AG, Honda Motor Co and Ford Motor Co, and auto suppliers Robert Bosch and Delphi Automotive.
