Now, ahead of its launch in January 2019, Tata unveiled the Harrier SUV in India and the images show the similarities it bears with the Harrier concept showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. Tata Motors has also rolled-out the 1st Harrier from its all-new manufacturing line in Pune based production facility. We know a few details about the SUV before it is revealed in its full glory with all the specifications and other pertinent details. Here’s all you need to know about the upcoming Tata Harrier SUV.

Design

The upcoming Tata Harrier is one of the most anticipated launches in India and Tata has already revealed the production version of the SUV. The Tata Harrier SUV is the first vehicle to sport the IMPACT Design 2.0 philosophy. The SUV in Orange color has flared wheel arches that house 5-spoke alloy wheels. It has a high shoulder line and blacked-out B pillars, while the C-pillar houses a triangular quarter glass. At the rear, the Harrier has a raked windshield, a spoiler and slim wraparound tail lamps. The dual-tone rear bumper appears to have a silver insert.

Cabin

Although, the company hasn’t officially revealed anything about the car’s interior yet but the spy shots have been surfacing online for quite a long time now. As per the spy shots, Tata Motors’ flagship SUV’s cabin will get a dual-tone grey-brown theme. It will also get small diameter steering similar to Tata Nexon, while the instrument panel gets conventional round dials. As seen on the teaser as well, the centre console gets a floating dashtop touchscreen infotainment unit akin to Nexon, but looks a bit bigger in size than the smaller sibling. Then there’ the rotary drive selector on the centre tunnel next to the six-speed manual transmission.

Platform

The Harrier SUV is likely to get the newly derived Kryotec 2.0L engine, which is Tata Motor’s name for the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. Power output is expected to be around 140hp.

Engine

The 5 seater monocoque SUV is engineered on the new generation ‘Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced’ Architecture, which is derived from the legendary Land Rover D8 architecture and developed in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover. The new OMEGA architecture is derived from the JLR’s versatile D8 architecture on which over one million vehicles are already built. The architecture has been designed to offer optimal torsional and bending stiffness to offer superior driving dynamics in both urban as well as rough road conditions. A video by Tata explains that the NVH (noise, vibrations, harshness) levels will be in check. As for safety, the crumple zone is made of high strength steel to make the SUV strong and rigid.

Price & Competition

Once the Tata Harrier SUV is launched in January 2019, the SUV will go up against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and the Nissan Kicks. Tata will also launch a 7-seater version in the coming years, most likely showcasing the product at the next Auto Expo in 2020. As for the price, the Tata Harrier is expected to be priced at a starting price of Rs 15 Lakh, going up to Rs 18 lakh.
