Bollywood filmmaker Vikas Bahl, who was most well known for making the progressive drama Queen, has hit the jackpot again with Shaitaan. Shaitaan is a supernatural thriller and goes on to define how the filmmaker is adept at tackling multiple genres of cinema.
The movie, which was a remake of the Gujarati film Vash, has raked in around Rs 161 crore worldwide on a budget of Rs 65 crore, thus making huge profits at the box office. The movie has also received rave reviews from critics, with Madhavan and Janki Bodiwala’s performances singled out for praise.
The success of Shaitaan also masks the massive debacle of Vikas Bahl’s earlier offering and is sort of a redemption arc for him. Barely 6 months ago, his science fiction action thriller Ganapath: Part 1 was released and turned out to be a washout at the box office. The film, which was set in a dystopian future, explored a post-apocalyptic world, a genre of science fiction rarely explored in Indian cinema. However, despite this. The Tiger Shroff and Kriti Sanon starrer failed at the box office. Released on October 20 last year, the poor screenplay and shoddy direction were unanimously criticised.
The movie, which was shot with a huge budget with extensive use of VFX and special effects, could not recover even 10 per cent of its production costs. According to media reports, Rs 200 crore was spent on the making of Ganapath: Part 1. A huge amount was spent on sets and VFX.
Post-release, the movie could only earn Rs 9.70 crore domestically. Globally, its box office collections were as low as Rs 13.38 crore. Ganapath Part 1 was announced in November 2020 but its pre-production took a long time. The shooting continued till February 2023. It was shot in London, Ladakh and Mumbai. After the dismal performance of the film, the planned sequel of the film was also scrapped.
