New Delhi: The Income Tax department (I-T) on Thursday initiated proceedings against Aditya Birla Group in coal blocks allocation case. Seeking information on coal block allocation to Hindalco, the I-T department also sought Supreme Court's permission to inspect the company's documents in the coal blocks allocation case which is now being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The CBI had earlier said that it will stand by the FIR against Aditya Birla group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla and former coal secretary PC Parakh in the coal blocks allocation scam.
The agency is continuing the probe despite Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement validating Talabira II coal block allocation to Birla-owned Hindalco.
The Prime Minister had earlier defended the Hindalco coal block allocation and said that he was satisfied with the decision taken regarding the coal block allocation. A statement released by the Prime Minister's office had said that the decision had been taken on the merits of the case.
The Prime Minister's office (PMO) had passed the buck on to the Odisha government saying that the state government recommended allocation of Talabira II coal block to Hindalco and supported the company in the screening committee.
