Government plans to employ 5,000 unemployed graduates from next fiscal year to help individuals to file their tax returns.

New Delhi: In a move to push revenue collections, Government plans to employ 5,000 unemployed graduates from next fiscal year to help individuals to file their tax returns.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram told the Lok Sabha on Friday in a written answer that selected graduates in commerce, law, economics; mathematics, statistics and business management and administration will be trained in the job.

To be known as Tax Return Preparers, the pilot scheme will impart classroom training, self-study and web-based training to selected candidates.

"During the financial year 2006-07, the scheme is being launched on a pilot basis to train 5,000 TRPs and to issue certification to successful candidates in February 2007," Chidambaram said.

NIIT has been selected as the agency for selection of candidates and imparting of training.

Chidambaram said the scheme would help small and medium taxpayers to file their returns.

"The scheme proposes to achieve the twin objectives of reducing the cost of compliance for small and medium taxpayers, thereby encouraging them to comply with tax laws and also provide self-employment opportunities to unemployed graduates all over the country," Chidambaram added.

Only three per cent of India's billion plus population pays income tax.
