Mkts volatile, end with marginal gains
On heavy alternate bouts of trading, the markets remained volatile on Thursday and ended on a disappointing note.

New Delhi: The markets remained volatile on Thursday and ended on a disappointing note giving up all their gains it had posted during the earlier part of day despite a strong bounce back in markets across Asia.

On heavy alternate bouts of trading, the benchmark Sensex ended with a moderate gain of nearly 14 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Thursday.

The Sensex, which had commenced the session with a gain of over 269 points, attracted profit-selling towards the end of the session. It closed higher by 14.23 points at 12,543.85.

The key index touched the day's high of 12,789.81 and a low of 12,510.75 points.

Similarly, the second wide-based National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, finished higher by 2.50 points at 3,643.60, after moving between 3,711.05 and 3,630.55 points.

The market remained mostly volatile following heavy trading activity in Information Technology and metal segment stocks besides interested buying on the market's second heaviest counter Reliance Industries.

Asian markets ended with gains of around 1-1.5 per cent. The European markets also opened in the positive terrain.

The midcap index ended flat the breadth also worsened with the increase in declines.

About 1,438 shares have advanced, 1,077 shares declined, and 68 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,368.18 up 44 points or 0.77 per cent.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,280.79 up 34 points or 0.66 per cent.

The BSE FMCG Index gained 1.9 per cent at 1,777.38. P and G, ITC, United Spirits, Dabur India closed in green.

The BSE Metal Index was up 0.8 per cent to close at 8,927.98. Hind Zinc, NALCO, SAIL, Sterlite Ind, JindalStainless were among the gainers.

The BSE Bankex was down 1.6 per cent at 6,694.82. Canara Bank, SBI, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, PNB moved downwards.

The BSE Health Care Index ended higher by 0.3 per cent at 3,613.07. Biocon, Dr Reddys Labs, Orchid Chemical, Ipca Labs, Matrix Lab closed higher.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 0.7 per cent at 9,145.74. Thermax, BHEL, ABB, Bharat Elec, Alfa Laval ended lower.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,305.07 down 1.13 per cent. Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Exide Industrie, Cummins, Sundaram-Clayton were among the losers.

The BSE IT Index closed at 5,172.40 up 1.4 per cent. Infosys, HCL Info, Mphasis, TCS ended strong.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 6,483.67 down 0.7 per cent. Chennai Petro, Petronet LNG, ONGC, BPCL ended in red.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7771.05 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26715.87 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3826.13 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 38313.05 crore.
