Sensex loses 41 points in choppy trade
The Sensex succumbed to profit-taking and ended in the red with a fall of 41.80 points at 13,340.21.

New Delhi: In a highly fluctuating market, the benchmark Sensex ended over 41 points down on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday as funds and investors preferred to book profits and change their portfolios.

The Sensex, which opened higher by 186.01 points in early trade on the back of a rally in heavyweight stocks, succumbed to profit-taking and ended in the red with a fall of 41.80 points at 13,340.21. Earlier, the key index touched the day's low of 13,232.56 points.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, ended 16.45 points down at 3,815.55 after moving between 3,886.10 and 3,787.55 points.

The major losers were Reliance Industries, Reliance Communications, Reliance Energy, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors, Hero Honda, Bharti Airtel, Grasim, Larsen and Toubro, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India and BHEL.

However, a surge in index-heaviest Infosys, Housing Development and Finance Corp, Maruti Udyog, Tata Steel, ONGC, ACC, Cipla and ITC Ltd saved the Sensex from a major fall.

About 1073 shares have advanced, 1413 shares declined, and 75 shares are unchanged.

The BSE midcap index was down 0.38 per cent or 21.38 points at 5574.40 and the BSE smallcap index was down 0.21 per cent or 13.94 points at 6,620.86.

The auto index fell 0.50 per cent or 25.93 points at 5205.23. Tata Motors, Hero Honda, Sundaram-Clayto, Apollo Tyres and Cummins ended in negative terrain.

The bankex tumbled 1.01 per cent or 69.68 points at 6841.88. Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, Allahabad Bank, Oriental Bank and ICICI Bank slid.

The capital goods index dropped 0.76 per cent or 67.26 points at 8826.71. Gammon India, Alstom Projects, Bharat Elec, Lakshmi Machine and Thermax closed in red.

The FMCG, healthcare and IT indices closed flat at 1902.59, 3684.38 and 5040.88 respectively.

However, the metal index was up 0.45 per cent or 38.76 points at 8644.17. Hindustan Zinc, Hindalco, Ispat Industries and Jindal Stainless ended up.

The oil & gas index was up 0.33 per cent or 20.15 points at 6039.31. Aban Offshore, BPCL, Essar oil, GAIL and HPCL ended in green.

The total turnover for today was Rs 60524 crore, out of which NSE and BSE cash turnover stood at Rs 10048.68 crore and 4394.68 crore respectively. The NSE F&O turnover was Rs 46081 crore.
