'Will Not Play Villain For A Few Years Because ...': Vijay Sethupathi
Speaking at the International Film Festival of India, Sethupathi said that playing a negative role requires quite a number of restrictions.

Vijay Sethupathi has been making headlines for his entry into Bollywood and his stellar performance in Farzi and Jawan. One of the most versatile actors in Indian cinema, Sethupathi’s illustrious career spans more than a decade in which he has nailed all his performances, whether as protagonists or antagonists.

The actor’s last performance as Kalee Gaikwad, the antagonist, in Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan got him critical acclaim. However, he is not interested in doing villain roles anymore and would refrain from accepting the same.

Speaking at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, the actor admitted that he agreed to play the antagonist numerous times as the protagonist would call him up to take up the role. Expressing that he will not be accepting villain roles anymore, Sethupathi said that he feels that makers put a lot of emotional pressure on him and that playing a negative role requires quite a number of restrictions.

Further explaining the restrictions, he revealed that a villain is required to underplay the character so that the protagonist is not overshadowed and most of the time, his parts as a villain are cut at the editing table as well.

These are the reasons that led the actor to step in with the decision that he will not take up any more villain roles, at least for a few years. It is pertinent to note that Vijay Sethupathi played a negative character in various films over the last few years. In 2012, he was presented the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for the Best Villain he played in the film Sundarapandian. It was directed by SR Prabhakaran.

Moving forward to 2017, he also left everyone stunned with his performance as a villain in the crime thriller film Vikram Vedha. In 2018, he, again, appeared in the film Petta, helmed by Karthik Subbaraj. The film was headlined by Rajinikanth. He has also played a negative role in the Telugu film Uppena, as well as the Tamil film Vikram, which featured Kamal Haasan in the lead and was helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
