Out of favour Pakistani batter Ahmed Shehzad was left heartbroken after Pakistan suffered its first-ever Test defeat against Bangladesh. In the first Test of the two-match series played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh managed to get the better of Shan Masood & Co. by 10 wickets on Sunday (August 25). The hosts could only manage to post a target of 30 runs in the fourth inning of the match for Bangladesh after getting bowled out for 146 runs in the second inning. The 30-run target was easily chased down by Najmul Hossain Shanto’s men in 6.4 overs without losing a wicket.
Pakistan’s embarrassing defeat in Rawalpindi came as a shock for fans and former greats of the game, and Shehzad feels the loss in the first Test marks a “new low” in Pakistan cricket. He expressed his disappointment by posting a video on X (formerly Twitter).
“Pakistan’s cricket has become such that Bangladesh has defeated Pakistan for the first time on Pakistan’s home soil. I have never seen Pakistan’s cricket go so low in my life. I have never seen it in my life. Betting, bowling, fielding, good or bad, these are later things. But Pakistan has hit a new low, which I have never seen in my life. And Pakistan will be able to get out of this defeat with great difficulty.”
؟#PAKvBAN pic.twitter.com/AdXZhy3z7n— Ahmad Shahzad (@iamAhmadshahzad) August 25, 2024
He further raised questions about the squad selection and criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for not “allowing domestic players to come in.” According to him, the governing body is more responsible than the players for the loss.
“We had said earlier that if you take a short-term decision, then Pakistan’s team is already on the dark side. It’s a hockey situation. But we didn’t expect you to lose to Bangladesh. Today you did that too. So I don’t think it’s the players’ fault. The fault is of the Pakistan Cricket Board. Because the players are never forcing you to put us in the team. You are the ones who are constantly feeding them. You are the ones who are not letting the domestic players come. You are the ones who are saying that we have nothing in domestic. So if you don’t have such players in domestic who can replace them, then what have you made so far?”
In another video, he held PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi responsible for the team’s poor state and said he has no idea about cricket.
“In fact, the decisions he is making prove that he has no idea about cricket at all. The same people who have been giving advice to the cricket board for 12–15 years—even today, the same people are present there. And the situation of Pakistan’s cricket has become such that today Bangladesh has defeated Pakistan for the first time on the home soil of Pakistan. I have never seen Pakistan cricket go so low in my life.”
