Ishan Kishan who is known for his skills with the bat and behind the stumps as a wicketkeeper, took up a different role as he rolled his arm to bowl in Jharkhand’s Buchi-Babu Invitational Tournament clash against Hyderabad.
Earlier against Madhya Pradesh, Kishan had scored a scintillating century to send a message to the selectors that he is still more than good enough for the international stage. But now, he has come in to showcase a skill that was not on display before. He bowled two overs of off-spin where he conceded just five runs, which is not shabby for a part-time bowler.
The wicketkeeper-batter has not been part of the Indian side, since the T20I series at home against Australia in November, following the 2023 ODI World Cup. He was also not included in the BCCI’s centrally contracted list of players with reports suggesting that his reluctance to play domestic cricket was the primary reason behind the call.

Now the 26-year-old will hope that his performances in the domestic circuit can enable the selectors to opt for his selection in India’s upcoming games. With Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the side, he will be expected to have the best players for India’s upcoming games.

The Indian team will be taking on Bangladesh in a two-match Test series followed by a three-match T20I series at home. This will be followed by a three-match Test series against New Zealand at home as well. However, the headline event for Indian cricket in the 2024 calendar will be the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy where Ishan will hope to secure a spot in the battle between two of cricket’s fiercest rivals.

Kishan can certainly use the domestic cricket opportunities by leading from the front as the skipper to ensure he does get the call to make his return to international cricket.
The Gautam Gambhir-era was underway with the Indian team travelling to Sri Lanka for their white-ball tour. The T20I side was able to get the 3-0 series victory under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav but Rohit Sharma’s return as the ODI captain was marred with disappointment as the Men in Blue suffered a 2-0 defeat against Sri Lanka.
