'Come the Occasion, Big players Stand Up': Rohit Sharma Credits Efforts Put in the Past 3-4 Years for T20 World Cup Victory
Reflecting on the side not being able to get over the line in previous instances, Rohit Sharma was glad that the side truly came together to help India take home the T20 World Cup 2024 title.

Reacting after leading India to a T20 World Cup title, the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma credited the success to all the hard work that has gone behind the preparation, said the emotional Indian captain.

India was able to end their long-standing ICC title drought by beating South Africa by a margin of 7 runs in a nail-biting contest at the Kensington Oval in Barbados to win their second T20 World Cup title.

“I am completely lost and can’t say what kind of emotions I am going through. Can’t explain it in words. Let this sink in. Last night, I couldn’t sleep as I was desperate and wanted it so badly. But I managed myself well inside the ground,” Rohit said after winning the trophy.

“Hard to sum up what we’ve been through in the last three to four years. A lot behind the scenes, not what we did today, it’s what we did before,” the captain added.

Reflecting on the past finals where the Indian team were unable to get over the line, he credited his side for holding their own despite being under pressure across both innings.

“A lot of high-pressure games, and we’ve been on the wrong side of it. Guys understand when the pressure is on, what needs to be done, today was a perfect example, we stuck together with backs to the wall.”

The 37-year-old didn’t forget to credit the team management and his fellow players for responding to his call.

“We wanted this really bad, a lot of minds need to come together, very proud of the bunch of boys and the management, giving us the liberty to play and that trust. Starts from management, coach, captain, and the players.”

No Doubts on Kohli’s Form

Having shared the field with Virat Kohli for over a decade, Rohit was quietly confident that the icon would come good once the final was here.

“No one was in doubt about the form of Virat, on top of his game for the last 15 years. Come the occasion, big players stand up. Crucial to hold that end, for the others to play around him.

Speaking regarding how he played in the conditions, Rohit hailed Kohli’s class with the bat as he scored a crucial 76 in 59 balls to help India post an above-par score in Barbados.

“…it wasn’t a wicket to bat freely. He did that perfectly, that experience of all the years come together, and Axar’s batting was crucial,” he said, lauding the 47-run effort by Patel.

Speechless on Bumrah’s Bowling Performance

Speaking regarding Bumrah’s clutch spell in the final stretch of the game, Rohit remained speechless as he continued to be confused about how the pacer could come up with such dominant performances regularly.

“Jasprit, I understand you guys trying to put it into words, but I don’t know how he does it, it’s just masterclass. He backs his skills which is more than enough, and is a confident lad. Class act,” Rohit said about Bumrah who won the player of the tournament.

Brilliant Hardik Pandya

Despite many questions regarding the selection of Hardik Pandya, the all-rounder was able to shut down the naysayers as he bowled the crucial final over where he helped the nation win the title and summed up his overall performances where he provides a balance with both bat and ball.

“Hardik was brilliant, to bowl that last over, proud of the boys. And the fans, from New York to Barbados, and back home. Late in India but they’ve been waiting a long time. Very proud of what we’ve achieved today.”
