Pakistan, after winning their last couple of Group Stage matches, will return home, dejected and disappointed. They have been eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024 and are currently dealing with a barrage of criticism around the clock. The skipper, Babar Azam is in hot waters as the former cricketers of the country have been demanding his resignation while the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to speak on the matter.
While Babar doesn’t have any plan to step down, former captains of the Pakistan cricket team, want him to do so. Veteran Shoaib Malik, who led the men in green in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2007, said he would have left the captain’s post immediately if he had been in Babar’s shoes.
Speaking on Ten Sports, Malik highlighted how captaincy has affected Babar’s performance in the shortest format of the game.
“I would have resigned immediately to focus on my cricket,” Malik told Ten Sports.
“This had happened with me in the past. I was offered captaincy again for a year around 2009-10, but I denied. I wanted to focus on my game. [In Babar’s case] I’m not saying for the sake of it but his numbers also tell a story,” he added.

Since taking charge as Pakistan captain, Babar has averaged 37.28 in 77 T20I innings which was close to 49, in 38 innings, when he was leading. Malik further said that even if Babar’s batting stats are overlooked, there hasn’t been any improvement in his leadership.
“If there was any improvement as a leader then definitely he should’ve continued. But there hasn’t been any. He captained in three T20 World Cups, an ODI World Cup and two Asia Cups but won nothing,” Malik added.
