Indian men’s cricket team assistant coach Abhishek Nayar is confident that star batter KL Rahul will make a turnaround in his performances starting with the second Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh, to be played at the Green Park in Kanpur from Friday.
KL Rahul has been around for long but has not established himself in the Test side. In 51 matches, he has scored 2901 runs, averaging 34.12.
“Sometimes it is just direction and I feel KL (Rahul) is someone who understands his game very well. In South Africa, he played tremendous knocks. We are very hopeful… the kind of combination that Gautam has had and I have had with him that hopefully we can have a turnaround in KL as well,” Abhishek Nayar said at the pre-match press-conference.
“These things sometimes take time. But I feel the way he is batting, even in the last game, I know we did not end up giving him much of a shot in the second innings. And I am pretty sure going forward you will see the expectations and the performances that you have from him,” he added.
India captain Rohit Sharma also had thrown his weight behind Rahul.
“There are handful of people in world cricket who had a smooth ride. Handful of cricketers had no issues all their life or if it was all good. Everyone has an up and down career. Best thing to do is to understand yourself, expectations from yourself and what’s needed for the team,” Rohit said during a media interaction ahead of the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Rahul did not have the best of outings in Chennai during the first test, which India won by 280 runs, with scores of 52-ball 16 and un beaten 19-ball 22.

Former India captain and head coach Ravi Shastri recently came up with a piece of advice for Rahul by saying that the Karanataka-based batter has got so much talent but he needs to realise that.
According to Shastri, who served as India’s head coach from 2017 to 2021, the day Rahul realises his talent, he will be a different player.
“KL Rahul needs to realise that he has got much talent. The day he realises that and comes out with a mindset and thinking in that fashion. He will be a different player,” Shastri said on commentary during the second session of the third day’s play of the first Test.
