India’s T20 World Cup Squad Updates: Rohit Sharma, Selectors to Meet in Delhi on April 27; Question Looms on Pandya, Jaiswal - Report
The selection committee is likely to meet on April 27 or 28 in New Delhi when Rohit Sharma will also be present in the national capital for Mumbai Indian's fixture against DC.

The T20 World Cup 2024 is around the corner as the Indian selectors will soon announce the squad in the coming days. Since the deadline to submit the provisional squad to the International Cricket Council (ICC) is May 1, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will likely hold a meeting in Delhi to lock in the final 15 who will fly to the West to participate in the showpiece event, starting June 2 Dallas and Guyana.

As reported by Dainik Jagran, the selectors will meet on April 27 or 28 in New Delhi. The Mumbai Indians are scheduled to play Delhi Capitals next week, on April 27, which means India captain Rohit Sharma will also be in the national capital. Chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, who is currently vacationing abroad, will fly directly to Delhi to join the meeting with his colleagues.

10 Names Confirmed

The report further stated that experienced figures would be preferred. Skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep are likely the sure shot selections and if they remain fit, they will board the flight to the US.

Pandya, Gill, Jaiswal – IPL Performance is the key

All-rounder Hardik Pandya is also in the selection race, but as per the report, his selection completely depends on his performance in the IPL. In the ongoing season, he has picked up only 4 wickets and scored 141 runs in 7 matches.

The toss for a back-up opener is between Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. While the Gujarat Titans captain is currently among the top-10 scorers of the season with 263 runs in 7 matches, Jaiswal is yet to produce his best. The Rajasthan Royals opener has managed just 121 runs in as many games, averaging only 17.29. Most likely only one of the two batters shall get the nod. However, if the selectors opt to have both of them, either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh might miss out.

The wicketkekeper’s tussle

The hotly-contested spot is of the wicketkeepers as the position is limited and the contenders are too many. Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant are front runners, while Ishan Ishan and KL Rahul are pushing their cases equally with some good IPL performances.

Rahul is currently the 4th highest run-getter of the season with 286 runs in 7 matches while Samson is just 10 runs behind. The RR skipper has 276 runs to his credit and 3 fifties. Meanwhile, Pant is the leading scorer for Delhi Capitals with 210 runs in 7 games.

Axar, Chahal, Bishnoi – fight for an extra spinner

With Jadeja and Kuldeep being the first-choice tweakers, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravi Bishnoi seem to fighting for the third spinner’s spot. While Patel brings his all-rounder qualities to the table, Chahal is the highest wicket-taker for India in the shortest format of the game. As far as their performance in the IPL 2024 is concerned, the leg-spinner is one of the contenders for the Purple Cap this season with 12 wickets whereas Patel and Bishnoi are placed below 20 on the list.
