Mayank Yadav was forced off the field after getting a wicket in what was his last ball in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Mayank, who repeatedly bowled 155-plus thunderbolts, got back-to-back ‘Player of the Match’ awards in the first two games before sustaining the injury. The 21-year-old had made his return to the side after missing quite a few matches due to a lower abdominal strain and after three weeks of complete rehabilitation.
After going for 31 runs in his first three overs on Tuesday, Mayank bowled it at 143 kph and at the top of the stumps. Mohammad Nabi looked to heave it on the leg side but got an inside edge of the bat back onto the pads and then onto the stumps.

Mayank though was unable to continue and walked off the field and Naveen-ul-Haq to complete the over.

In the end, Mumbai Indians posted 144/7 from their 20 overs against Lucknow Super Giants. Nehal Wadhera top-scored for MI with 46 while Tim David and Ishan Kishan made 35 not out and 32 respectively. For LSG, Mohsin Khan took two wickets while Marcus Stoinis, Mayank Yadav, Naveen-ul-Haq and Ravi Bishnoi got one each.
In reply, Stoinis scored a 45-ball 62, studded with seven hits to the fence and two maximums but once he was gone LSG survived some anxious moments before getting home with four balls to spare.
After the match LSG head coach Justin Langer revealed that Mayank may have hurt himself again with the injury.
“Looks like he’s sore in the same spot, his rehab’s been absolutely perfect, he bowled pain-free in the last few week or so, he’s looked in great condition. We’ll have a scan and we’ll find out tomorrow,” Langer said.
LSG skipper KL Rahul said Mayank had complained of slight pain in his sides.
“I have not really spoken to him. He had slight pain in his side and after the first ball, he said that there was a bit of pain. Thought there was no need to risk it, he is still a young lad.
“It is not just the pace. This game, he showed he has more skills than bowling 150-plus. The more he plays, the more he will learn when to bowl what. Right now, we have given him a free hand to just enjoy himself and bowl what he wants.”
