Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by 20 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in their Indian Premier League clash.

IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings – HIGHLIGHTS

A lot happened in this match but if there is one thing this match will be remembered for, it will be MS Dhoni’s three consecutive sixes in the last over. The crowd kept on chanting Dhoni’s name throughout the innings as they wanted the former Indian captain to come out to bat and grace the field. MS finally walked out when four balls were left in the innings and did what he does best- finishing.

This loss would hurt Mumbai Indians badly as their chances of qualifying for the playoffs are dwindling with every loss now. Mumbai will now have a long break from home games as they will be on the road again, starting from Mohali, until the first week of May.

CSK started their batting with an experiment as Ajinkya Rahane opened for CSK along with Rachin Ravindra.

The experiment didn’t work as Coetzee dismissed Ajinkya Rahane in the second over of the match. Rahane tried clearing the mid-on but couldn’t connect the ball well and ended up handing an easy catch to the opposition skipper Hardik Pandya.

Gaikwad smashed 14 runs in Coetzee’s second over with 2 fours and 1 sixes to get some momentum in his team’s favour.

At the end of the powerplay, CSK was 48/1 with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad batting on 29 and Rachin Ravindra on 12.

Shreyas Gopal sent the young Kiwi opener Rachin Ravindra back to the dressing room in the 8th over. It was a DRS dismissal as the home team appealed for caught behind but the umpire gave not out. MI went upstairs and there was a spike on the ultra edge and Ishan’s sharp hearing was successful in hearing the faith edge.

Skipper Hardik Pandya took the ball in hand for the 10th over and started the over with a four. Hardik conceded 15 runs in his first over which included three boundaries by Shivam Dube.

At the end of the 10 over mark, CSK were 80/2 with Shivam Dube on 15 off 10 balls and Ruturaj Gaikwad on 36 off 26 balls.

Gaikwad was dropped by Rohit on 39. It was a tough chance, Rohit had to run to his right and dive to take a low catch. He did everything right but couldn’t hold onto the ball.

Skipper Gaikwad completed his half-century in 33 balls with a six in the 13th over. This was his second consecutive half-century of the season.

Romario Shepherd conceded 22 runs in his second over with 2 sixes and 2 fours, and each of them was followed by the chants of ‘CSK..CSK’.

At the end of 15 overs, CSK were 149/2 with Gaikwad on 69 and Dube on 49.

Shivam Dube completed his fifty in 28 balls with a single to Pandya in the 16th over. On the very next ball, Gaikwad tried clearing the straight boundary but couldn’t time it well and Nabi took a high catch running in from the long-on boundary.

The last over of that innings was what every single fan in the stadium came to watch. MS Dhoni came out when four balls were remaining and he smashed three consecutive sixes to Hardik Pandya.

In the chase, Mumbai Indians again had a great start with both the openers scoring at the rate of 10.50 in the powerplay. Both Rohit and Ishan showed their power-hitting ability to clear the boundaries and deliver the ball into the stands.

At the end of 6 overs, MI was 63/0 with Ishan Kishan on 21(11) and Rohit Sharma 42(25).

Matheesa Pathirana came in and provided CSK with a breakthrough in his first over. Ishan tried to flick one towards mid-wicket but couldn’t keep the ball grounded, as it went straight into the hands of Shardul Thakur at short mid-wicket.

Pathirana struck again in the same over and this time it was a big scalp. Suryakumar Yadav tried hitting an uppercut over the third man for a six but Mustafizur took a brilliant catch on the boundary.

Rohit Sharma brought up his half-century in 30 balls with a boundary to Ravindra Jadeja.

At the end of 10 overs, MI were 90/2 with Rohit Sharma batting on 55(36) and Tilak Varma batting on 12(7).

Pathirana then returned and provided CSK with another breakthrough in the 14th over of the match. Shardul Thakur took a terrific catch while running back to dismiss Tilak Varma.

At the end of the 15th over, MI were 132/3, with Rohit Sharma batting on 77(49) and Hardik Pandya batting on 1(4).

Soon, Tushar Deshpande dismissed skipper Hardik Pandya on the score of 2 in the 16th over of the innings. Hardik tried clearing the mid-wicket boundary on a bouncer but ended up handing an easy catch to Jadeja standing at the boundary.

Mustafizur came back to bowl his third over and dismissed Tim David in the 17th over. Romario Shepherd soon followed Tim as Pathirana castled his stumps in the 18th over to take his 4th wicket of the match.

Mumbai Indians’ finish will only be remembered for Rohit Sharma’s century. The crowd erupted as Rohit shamshed a four to complete his second IPL century but it was a muted celebration from the opener.
