Royal Challengers Bengaluru are languishing at the bottom of the table in IPL 2024 with one win so far in their eight league games and their chances of making it to the IPL 2024 playoffs are looking slimmer by the day. Most teams have played eight games – more than half of what they will play in the league stages and there are four other teams, having played seven games, which are way ahead of RCB at this point.
Their latest one-run loss to the Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday has more or less sealed RCB’s fate for this season regarding playoff qualifications. With a 10-team league, the points threshold to secure a safe passage to a playoff berth is 16, and with six games remaining, RCB can mathematically reach 14 points if they manage to win all their remaining games.

How Many Points Are Required to Reach the Playoffs
Until the league comprised eight teams (till 2021), reaching 14 points more or less ensured that you qualified for the playoffs, barring the off chance that you were tied on points with other teams and your net run rate was less than the teams you are tied with. The 2019 edition even saw SRH qualify for the playoffs with 12 points. But, in the last two editions, with two additional teams, the fourth-placed team (the last team to qualify for the playoffs) had to secure 16 points to make the top four. That means you must win eight games in the league stages for a safe passage to the IPL playoffs, and that may still not be enough if you are tied on points with the other teams.
Can RCB Still Make the IPL 2024 Playoffs?
RCB can reach a maximum of 14 points only and seems quite an impossible task for the Faf du Plessis-led side to make the playoffs even if they win all their matches. But, mathematically, RCB are not yet ruled out of the playoff race, and apart from the fact they will have to mount an incredible comeback, some results from other matches also will have to go their way.
The IPL is known for its unpredictability, and it’s still early to predict which teams will make the playoffs. For instance, Rajasthan Royals are just one win away from reaching the 16-point threshold with six more matches to go while Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad are just two wins away from reaching 16 points. Both teams have seven more matches to go.
Maximum Points Accumulated in IPL History
In the inaugural season of IPL in 2008, Rajasthan Royals, with 22 points, topped the league stages, winning 11 out of their 14 matches—a feat repeated by the erstwhile Kings XI Punjab in 2014. In 2012, the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) also reached 22 points, followed by Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in 2013—but in both those seasons, teams played two extra games, ending with 16 matches in the league stages.
